course description

The Canyons 100K is a double out-and-back course based in Foresthill CA with a start-finish-village at the old Foresthill Elementary School. It is run mostly on single-track. The Canyons section starting in Foresthill, heading to the Swinging Bridge and back, is run entirely along the historical Western States Trail. The Cal St. section continues on the WS Trail from Foresthill to Rucky Chuck and back.

You will start going East on Foresthill Rd, left on Bath Rd and then pick up the single track at 1.5 miles as you drop into Volcano Canyon. You will climb sharply then roll along to Michigan Bluff at mile 6.2 followed by a nearly 3 mile 1800 feet drop down El Dorado Canyon at mile 9. The biggest climb of 2500 feet is next, up past Deadwood Cemetery to the water Pump at mile 13.5. Finally passing by Devil's Thumb and plunging down the extremely steep and twisting descent of 1700 feet in 1.5 miles to the Swinging Bridge at the turn around. Head back the way you came to Foresthill.

Runners return to Foresthill Elementary School at the half way point where you continue on Foresthill Rd for less than a mile and go left on Cal St, a quick right-left on Lowe St and then cross Mosquito Ridge Rd where you pick up the single track again. A steep descent and several creek crossings bring you to Ca1 at mile 35.5. The trail rolls along above the middle fork of the American River until you hit the "elevator shaft" descent prior to Cal2 at mile 40.5. Make sure you fill up here, its almost 8 miles to Rucky Chucky and the turn around at mile 47.8 in what is likely the heat of the day. Cal Street to Rucky Chucky is the fastest 16-mile section of the WS Trail, but be sure to save some energy for the climb back to the finish, where the post-race celebrations, complete with hot grilled food and cold drinks, will be one to remember!

aid stations

Runners will be supported with 12 Aid Stations along the course. Aid stations will be well-stocked with ultrarunner favorites including GU gels and chews, Gu Roctane lemon berry energy drink, water(with drops of lemon juice), PB&J sandwiches, Coke, Sprite, fresh fruit, potato chips, salty&sweet snacks and the best volunteers ever. Please note that this is an extremely challenging run, and it can get very hot in the canyons, so it is recommended that you carry a minimum of 2 water bottles or a hydration pack.

drop bags

Drop bags are allowed at the start/finish (also halfway point for the 100K) and the Rucky Chucky (mile 47.8) aid station. Runners should bring drop bags to the start/finish at Forest Hill Elementary School on the morning of the race. Drop bags will be returned to Foresthill by 9pm and be available for pickup until 10am Sunday.  All unclaimed drop bags will be sorted for perishables and usable items to be donated or discarded.

CUt-off time

There is an 18-hour time limit for the 100K (11:30 pm) in order to earn a Western States qualifier.

Cutoffs are: Foresthill: 3pm, Rucky Chucky: 7pm, Cal 2: 9pm and Cal 1: 10:30 pm. Due to the delay at Volcano Creek, we will allow 15 extra minutes at the on-course cutoffs but this will not change the WSER qualifying time of 18 hours! This will allow you the opportunity to RALLY and make up for lost time!

Headlamps are not likely to be needed for the start, but those runners anticipating a later finish should include a headlamp in a drop bag at the turnaround.

crew and safety runners

Due to the remote location of the Canyons Endurance Runs, crew is only allowed at the start/finish at Foresthill Elementary School (also halfway point for the 100K) and at the Rucky Chucky aid station. There is a day-use fee collected by State Parks at Rucky Chucky.

Runners leaving Rucky Chucky after 6 pm may have a safety runner accompany them to help keep runners on course and ahead of cutoffs. Pacers are not allowed!
